Chapter Forty-Three

I didn’t have any duct tape remaining, having used the entire roll previously to subdue Mick. Bindings that had done exactly as they were supposed to, rendering him basically immobile in the trunk of the car. Restrictions that had just minutes before been lessened as I slashed the tape around his ankles and the tether securing them to his wrists.

A small loosening from the human pretzel he had been so I could order his overgrown ass out of the trunk. A short journey on a wounded leg that took no small amount of effort, but was still better than having to try and wrestle him around by myself.

Bulk and heft that would have been damned near impossible, better served by letting him stagger along in a haze.

A state of semi-awareness that was still on plain display as he rested on the sofa in the living room of the same cabin Quinn and I drove away from barely two hours before. A location that was the best I could come up with on short notice after extracting Leland Doone from the pair of screaming ladies he was entangled with in the cottage on Mercer Island. Paramours that combined weren’t as old as me who took one look at the silhouette holding a gun in the doorway and immediately began to shriek.

Cries of terror that reverberated through the small house, threatening to reach the neighbors, cut short by light swats to the side of the head. Blows that might leave a small goose egg in the morning, but were mainly meant to silence them.

Shots that I would normally never levy on innocent young ladies, dealt under the auspice of where they were and who they were with. Guilt by association that made them my adversary, playing some small role in whatever had happened to my granddaughter.

Young ladies who would wake up with just each other before long and question if what they remembered really happened, or was merely a result of the empty mini bottles that lined the nightstand. Maybe even the faint lines of white powder that were sprinkled between them.

A confused discussion that would end with them feeling the knots on their heads and asking more questions before eventually stumbling home.

Provided, of course, that they didn’t find the body of Leland’s final guard stuffed in the closet with his bag of chips along the way.

The best I could do on short notice with Mick and Leland already occupying the entire trunk. A tight squeeze that required a lot of pushing, but was better than risking Leland waking up in the backseat and attacking me.

Even worse, getting pulled over for something innocuous like a busted taillight and trying to explain the bleeding, unconscious kid sprawled across the backseat.

Let alone how I came to be driving a stolen luxury sedan with a gunshot victim in the trunk and a loaded Beretta on the floorboard.

In and out of the small cottage on Mercer Island in less than fifteen minutes, it had taken another forty to get back to the cabin.
